Understanding The Repo Man

With today’s economy the repo man is one of the most terrifying figures in our psyche today. If he is visiting you, you can be sure that things are not the best they can be. The most important thing is to be aware of your rights under the law when dealing with professional repossession agents. There are plenty of legitimate reasons for being delinquent on your debt. If you were not able to make your payments fully and on time, do not worry – all is not lost.

In a lot of cases, repo men have been known to outright lie to their “customers” by saying that they are not there to confiscate a vehicle, when in fact they are. They do this primarily in order to prevent you from getting upset, and to avoid giving you time to stop them.

According to the repo cars guide there are limitations on what a repossession company can do. The law states that repo men cannot physically force entry by breaking barriers (such as fences, locks, or chains) in the process of accessing a property. He can neither erect these same physical barriers (chains or locks) in order to secure and defend any of your property. Furthermore, the repo man cannot actually confiscate a vehicle if the process of doing so will disturb the peace. In a similar vein, repo men cannot confiscate a car if doing so would threaten to impose injury on them or anyone else, as this would be breaking the law.

It is important to remember, then, that the repo man is limited in what he is allowed to do. If you are not aware of this, it will be to your disadvantage – repo men can easily differentiate between people that are merely pretending to know the law, and people that actually do know the law. If the repo man figures out that you are unaware of the limits placed on him by the law, he will use that to his advantage and trick you. Do your research before the repo man comes, and if at all possible, chain or otherwise secure your vehicle to the premises beforehand.

That said, though, the best way to deal with a repossession agent is to avoid having to see him at all, by staying current on your bills. Ultimately, this is the only permanent cure to that plague upon humanity we colloquially term the repo man. But if you must deal with him regardless, do your research.
